NORTHINGTON
The modern form is a Tudor development. The older name is hypothetical Old English 'Northhaematun'='farm of the north dwellers'. It is hard to decide from which place it was thought to be north; perhaps (Old) Alresford. It is immediately north of Swarraton, a better candidate if it could be shown conclusively to be an ancient foundation. Late in the 13th century a tradition 'Non(e)hampton' arises and is found for 50 years. Since the land belonged to Hyde Abbey in Winchester (from the 10th century), the older name may have been altered, by a loose piece of folk etymology, to suggest hypothetical Middle English 'Nunnehampton'='nuns' Hampton', but the tradition was scribal only.
